CO-DISCUSSANT:
I am Dr. Alaine Hutson, Professor of History at Huston-Tillotson University. I have taught and researched at HT since fall of 2008. I previously was on the history faculty at Missouri State University and taught at Michigan State University, and Houston Community College. I was trained in Modern African history at Indiana University, Oxford University and SOAS, but now research and publish more about the Middle East. I specialize in African and Middle East history with an emphasis on slavery and gender in Islamic societies. I also teach and publish environmental history.
My research is currently surrounding the question: Is there an African Diaspora in the Middle East? In pursuit of that research, I founded and continue to edit the REMAP (Runaway, Enslaved and Manumitted [persons] on the Arabian Peninsula) database website (www.remapdatabase.org ) which is a free searchable website with information and some of the primary sources for those enslaved on the Peninsula in the 20th Century.
