Liliana L. has come to the ESOL Program with the goal of building a stronger future through education and English fluency. She has already achieved two major milestones, earning her GED and becoming a US citizen. Liliana says she feels grateful for the opportunities ACC and the ESOL Program have afforded her since coming to the US from Holguín in southeastern Cuba. A group of women and a girl in front of a blue banner.

Liliana started at ACC in the School of College Readiness (formerly Adult Education) beginner’s ESL program and moved into the academic ESOL Program in Spring 2026. She describes her ESOL experience as overwhelmingly positive, sharing, “Before taking ESOL, I felt sad, but now I feel comfortable because I learned writing, grammar, and oral communication skills in my ESOL classes.” Liliana will continue coursework in these skill areas and will also take Reading and Vocabulary courses in the summer and fall semesters.

Like most ESOL students, Liliana balances multiple responsibilities, including caring for her child and working as a caregiver. She is planning for future opportunities in digital marketing and real estate. She invests her free time in self-care and personal health by going to the gym and staying active, pursuits she greatly enjoys.

Professor Khan, Liliana’s former Oral Communication 1 instructor, notes that Liliana stood out for her confidence, energy, and willingness to participate in class discussions, sharing insights and opinions. She brought a bright, enthusiastic presence to the classroom and encouraged others.

Liliana has a simple yet powerful message for current and future ESOL students: “Feeling scared is normal. Keep going. Don’t stop!”
