Philosophy Forum Lecture Series: Social Contract

The Philosophy Forum lecture series opens with a discussion on Social Contract Theory. Do we choose to live in a society? If so, why should we live in a society? These questions and more will be discussed within the context of the Social Contract Theory by exploring the philosophies of several modern thinkers including, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Marx and Rawls.

Philosophy Forum Lecture Series: Political Power and the State

The Philosophy Forum lecture series continues with the Political Power and the State discussion. What is the origin of the state and what purpose does it serve? Does reason have a role in the purpose of the state? How much power does the state have? To answer these questions, the philosophies of Machiavelli and Hobbes will be discussed.

Philosophy Forum Lecture Series: Koyaanisqatsi

The Philosophy Forum lecture series continues with a film Screening of Koyaanisqatsi. Released in 1983, the film is director Godfrey Reggio’s debut as a film director and producer and is the first film of the Qatsi trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi was the first full-length commercial nonverbal film capturing 90 minutes of stunning visual images of North America and set to a moving score composed by Philip Glass. Koyaanisqatsi is a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance”. Created between 1975 and 1982, Koyaanisqatsi is an apocalyptic vision of two different worlds – urban life and technology versus the environment.

Philosophy Forum Lecture Series: Women, Education and the Social Contract

The Philosophy Forum lecture series concludes with a discuss on women, education and the social contract. Who participates in the social contract? What role does education play in that participation? This lecture will address the philosophies of Rousseau and Wollstonecraft and their views on the role of women in society.
