Aran Gharibpour –

Adjunct Professor of Philosophy

Biography

I gave up mechanical engineering some years ago and flew over some oceans and continents to become a philosopher in the States. I graduated with a master’s degree from San Francisco State University in 2018.

Teaching Philosophy

I think of philosophy as the highest peak of critical thinking, where nothing is exempt from intellectual interrogation. I encourage my students to give up their dogmatic presuppositions and think about the world afresh. Painters could really see a scene that others only think they see; a snowy landscape seems undoubtedly white to our eyes, but the trained painter sees all the reds, blues, and browns, all the shades, curves, and lines. Painting opens up one’s eyes to all the counterintuitive nuances in the visual field. Philosophy has the same task in the mental field. I invite my students to look at all sorts of different frameworks, see their flaws for themselves, learn from those flaws, move on to a modified framework, and go through the same process again.
