Philosophy, Religion and Humanities Lecture Series presents “Sita Sings the Blues”

Written, directed, and animated by American artist Nina Paley, this 2008 film tells the epic Hindu tale of the Ramayana set to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw. Following the film, a discussion will be hosted by Grant Potts, Chair of the Philosophy, Religion and Humanities department. This event is free and open to the public.

Philosophy, Religion and Humanities Lecture Series: The Ethical Philosophy of “Breaking Bad”

Breaking Bad has earned an enduring place in television history for its uncompromising exploration of ethics. Although the show’s premise is straightforward–condemned by fate to suffer a random cancer diagnosis, mild-mannered chemistry teacher Walter White decides to start cooking methamphetamine in order to “provide for the family”–its treatment of ethics is highly complex. This lecture will examine some of Mr. White’s choices by placing them in conversation with three of history’s most famous ethical philosophers: Niccolo Machiavelli, Immanuel Kant, and Jeremy Bentham.
