Courses
Faculty employ a variety of experientially-focused teaching methods in the classroom: games, role-playing activities, active learning, creative projects, collaborative learning, and flipped classroom methodology. Classes also incorporate traditional methods such as lectures, discussions, essays, and exams. These strategies help students engage with the course material and examine the course concepts from multiple angles. Our goal is to connect events and developments from the past with the modern world, providing students with a greater understanding of other cultures, enhanced cultural capital, and a stronger sense of global citizenship.

PHIL 1301 – INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY
Students will be introduced to various significant philosophical issues and thinkers and to the practice of philosophical analysis.

PHIL 2303 – LOGIC
Students will be introduced to the rules of argument, inductive and deductive reasoning, the recognition of informal and formal fallacies, and the application of logical thinking in work and social situations.
PHIL 2306 – ETHICS
Students will be introduced to the principles of morality through a critical examination of various ethical theories and their application to contemporary moral problems.
PHIL 2306 – ETHICS: PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES
This course relates topics in PHIL 2306 to questions of war, peace, social justice and conflict resolution. It is part of ACC’s Peace and Conflict Studies program, but is open to all students and counts as a standard PHIL 2306 course.

PHIL 2307 – INTRO TO SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY
Students will be introduced to a critical examination of fundamental social and political concepts, e.g., justice, rights, and political obligation.
PHIL 2316 – ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY
Students will be introduced to Ancient Western Philosophy from the pre–Socratics through the Hellenists with emphasis on Plato and Aristotle. Prerequisites: PHIL 1301.
PHIL 2321 – PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION
Students will be introduced to the philosophical analysis of the nature of religion and religious experience with an emphasis on such themes as rationality and religious belief, the existence and attributes of God, and the problem of evil.
PHIL 1304 – INTRODUCTION TO COMPARATIVE RELIGION
Students will be introduced to the comparative study of religion and world religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

HUMA 1301 – HUMANITIES: PREHISTORY TO RENAISSANCE
A study of representative samples of literature, art, and music of various periods and cultures from prehistory through the Renaissance. The study of the interrelationships of the arts and their philosophies emphasizes an understanding of human nature and the values of human life.
HUMA 1301 – HUMANITIES: PREHISTORY TO RENAISSANCE: GREAT QUESTIONS SEMINAR
A study of the interrelationships of the arts and sciences and their philosophies and an inquiry into human nature and the values of human life. Students employ an interdisciplinary study of representative samples of literature, art, mathematics and music of various periods and cultures from prehistory to the Renaissance in the context of discussion based seminars to acquire and sharpen effective learning strategies and critical thinking skills, enabling students to better understand, retain and apply information in a higher education environment.

HUMA 1302 – HUMANITIES: RENAISSANCE TO PRESENT
A study of representative samples of literature, art, and music of various periods and cultures from the Renaissance through the present. The study of the interrelationships of the arts and their philosophies emphasizes an understanding of human nature and the values of human life.
HUMA 1305 – INTRODUCTION TO MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES
This interdisciplinary survey examines the different cultural, artistic, economic, historical, political, and social aspects of the Mexican-American/Chicano/a communities. It also covers issues such as dispossession, immigration, transnationalism, and other topics that have shaped the Mexican-American/Chicano/a experience.
HUMA 1311 – MEXICAN-AMERICAN FINE ARTS APPRECIATION
This course is an exploration of the purposes and processes in the visual and performing arts (such as music, painting, drama, and dance) and the ways in which they express the values of the Mexican American/Chicano/a experience.
HUMA 1315 – THE ARTS IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY
An introductory course designed to enhance a student’s understanding and appreciation of the modes of communicating ideas and emotions through the visual and performing arts. May be repeated for a maximum of six credit hours when topics vary.
Special Topics Include: Digital Humanities, Americana, and Popular Culture.
