The story uses historical fiction to highlight the relationship between religion and science amidst the decline of Greco-Roman polytheism and the Christianization of the Roman empire. The title of the film takes its name from the agora, a gathering place in ancient Greece, similar to the Roman forum. The biopic focuses on Hypatia, a female mathematician, philosopher and astronomer in 4th century Roman Egypt who investigates the flaws of the geocentric Ptolemaic system and the heliocentric model that challenges it.

Presented by Roy Casagranda, ACC Government Department and Matt Watkins, ACC Philosophy Department.

Back to the main Events page.

October 5, 2011 Revolution 7-9:00pm | EVC, Room 8500 In light of the recent revolutions and uprisings in the Arab world, this panel will take on the philosophy of revolution after a brief overview of the history of the Arab Revolutions since December 17, 2010.
