Offerings subject to change based upon ongoing curriculum review.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"anchor\"><strong>Courses in Philosophy<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_9 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3 class=\"has-black-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www6.austincc.edu\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www6.austincc.edu\/schedule\/index.php?op=browse&amp;opclass=ViewSched&amp;term=221F000&amp;disciplineid=TFCOE&amp;yr=2022&amp;ct=CC\"><strong>Philosophy 2306 \u2013 Ethics<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ethics with Global Studies Focus<\/strong>, Linda Cox<\/p>\n<p>In this Global Ethics course, students will delve into challenging and complex moral questions and explore possible solutions from a variety of global perspectives.\u00a0 They\u2019ll build an ethical toolbox to look at global approaches to social issues such as criminal justice, animal rights and interests, healthcare, and hunger.\u00a0 And then they\u2019ll collaborate in a game where groups use their creative and critical thinking skills to build an ethical society\u2013and then encounter unforeseen crises that challenge their ethical thinking along the way!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justice and Equality: Theory and Practice<\/strong>, J. Wade Allen<\/p>\n<p>Students will be introduced to the principles of morality through a critical examination of various ethical theories. In this particular course, we will be looking to apply those theories to issues of justice and equality, with a particular focus on racial justice. We will (1) be addressing the philosophical tools to solve ethical problems, while also reviewing the topic of moral skepticism and an analysis of justice from Plato\u2019s\u00a0<em>Republic,<\/em>\u00a0(2) we\u2019ll address a number of traditional and non-traditional ethical theories and think about their impact on issues related to justice, (3) we will address philosophical concepts of justice and how they apply to issues concerning race, and, finally, (4) students will make use of what they have learned to create their own group or individual arguments about particular issues related to racial injustice, which they will present to the rest of the class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Racial Justice: Theory and Practice<\/strong>, Sherry Blum<\/p>\n<div>Students will be introduced to the principles of morality through a critical examination of various ethical theories, and applying those theories to practical situations, in particular, to issues of race and racial justice. The focus on issues of race and racial justice will entail a focus on how philosophical tools can be used to address racism, the impact of a variety of traditional and non-traditional ethical theories and concepts of justice on racial issues, as well as how racism itself has been subjected to philosophical analysis. At the end of the semester, students will each research, create, and discuss with fellow students individual recorded presentations or written essays on topics related to racial justice.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_10 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h1 class=\"anchor\"><strong>Courses in Humanities<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_11 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3 class=\"has-black-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www6.austincc.edu\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www6.austincc.edu\/schedule\/index.php?op=browse&amp;opclass=ViewSched&amp;term=221F000&amp;disciplineid=TFCOE&amp;yr=2022&amp;ct=CC\"><strong>Humanities 1302 \u2013 Humanities: Renaissance to Present<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Give Peace a Chance<\/strong>, Sarah Bowman<\/p>\n<p>This course focuses on social issues throughout history from a global\u00a0perspective. In addition to learning about historical and cultural shifts since the Renaissance, students closely read and analyze\u00a0works of art from creators who\u00a0have advocated for peace, social justice, and nonviolent solutions to conflict. Many approaches\u00a0to history\u00a0focus\u00a0on conflict, war, and oppression and many cultural artifacts have been created\u00a0that glorify war and conquest. While the study of violence is never far from the study of peace,\u00a0this course aims to emphasize individuals within social\u00a0movements since the Renaissance who have\u00a0focused their creative output and social interventions on ways to develop a more peaceful,\u00a0equitable world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exploring Global Influence in the Western World<\/strong>, Kerri Pope<\/p>\n<p>This course explores the global influences on Western culture, innovation, and art.\u00a0 Students in this course make connections between European innovations and artworks and explore the role Colonialism plays in the dissemination and discussion of global culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Freedom?\u00a0<\/strong>Kathleen Reeves<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Freedom?\u201d surveys cultural works from the Renaissance to the present that are concerned with the nature of freedom, broadly defined. How is freedom achieved? Is it a quality or an action? How is it related to individuals and communities? Is freedom ever undesirable (do people ever desire to be free of freedom)? Possible texts range from Renaissance sonnets which ask how romantic love (or divine love) is related to freedom, to utopias, to paintings depicting national revolutionary struggles, to essays, visual art, and literature related to the many freedom struggles of the 20th and 21st centuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_12 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3 class=\"has-black-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www6.austincc.edu\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www6.austincc.edu\/schedule\/index.php?op=browse&amp;opclass=ViewSched&amp;term=221F000&amp;disciplineid=TFCOE&amp;yr=2022&amp;ct=CC\"><strong>Humanities 1315 \u2013 The Arts in Contemporary Society<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Strategies for Diversifying Exhibition<\/strong>, Jean Lauer<\/p>\n<p>An introductory course designed to enhance a student\u2019s understanding and appreciation of the modes of communicating ideas and emotions through the visual and performing arts. This section focuses on how contemporary\u00a0museums, festivals, and archives engage the public in arts and culture.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Science Fiction in Literature and Media Arts<\/strong>, Jean Lauer<\/p>\n<p>In this course, students will have the opportunity to delve into the genre of science fiction in a variety of media, from \u201cclassic\u201d texts like Shelley\u2019s\u00a0<i>Frankenstein<\/i> to contemporary media including graphic novels, films, television, and other visual arts.
