Biography

Alexander Misthos received his Bachelor of Arts degrees from Louisiana State University (double majoring in History and Philosophy). He then went on to receive his Master’s degree in Philosophy after studying and teaching at San Diego State University.

Teaching Philosophy

To my mind, the two primary aims of philosophy teaching consist of:

  1. Inculcating rigorous argument and reading skills,
  2. Familiarizing students with major arguments and the development of ideas from the history of philosophy.

Mechanically, class is run on a traditional lecture format in which the texts of various philosophers are explained and engaged with. Discussion-based classes are used more often in Ethics courses insofar as one of the principal goals of an Ethics class involves the cultivation of students’ individual moral reasoning abilities. Examinations and writing assignments are used in order to assess student knowledge of course material, as well as students’ ability to critically engage with problems and figures from the history of philosophy.
