{"id":263,"date":"2019-07-11T21:00:22","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T21:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/peace-conflict-studies\/?page_id=263"},"modified":"2019-07-11T21:00:22","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T21:00:22","slug":"faculty-reflections","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/liberalarts.austincc.edu\/peace-conflict-studies\/faculty\/faculty-reflections\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"parent":233,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-263","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":{"layouts":[{"acf_fc_layout":"one_column","heading":"Equity in Online Learning","column_1":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">PACS Center Focus Group on Equity in Online Instruction<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Considerations for choosing between synchronous versus asynchronous\u00a0course designations and designs<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Please view the attached document to review our PACS Center Focus Group on Equity in Online Instruction&#8217;s thoughts on synchronous versus asynchronous course designations and designs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/instruction.austincc.edu\/peace-conflict-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2020\/05\/Equity-Considerations-for-Synchronous-vs-Asynchronous-Instruction.pdf\">Equity Considerations for Synchronous vs Asynchronous Instruction<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Takeaways from the PACS Advisory Committee meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 attended by PACS Advisory Committee members and guests: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Angelica Cancino, Chelsea Biggerstaff, Gale Spear, Kerri Pope, Lillian Huerta, Loretta Edelen, Lydia CdeBaca, Marcus McQuirter, Michael-Paul Hernandez, Roberta Weston, Sarah Bowman, Shirin Khosropour, Laila Taraghi, Ramish Nadeem, Sam Echevarria-Cruz, Ted Hadzi-Antich Jr<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Charlotte Gullick, Khayree Williams, Roberta Weston, and Tobin Quereau.<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attendees acknowledged the important role that synchronous learning plays in fostering community, mutual support, accountability, and student success while also acknowledging the need to not penalize students who require the flexibility of asynchronous options for completing course requirements given the abundance of potential barriers or factors that may be at play for them (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">parenting students, students with shift work, or who lack access to devices with mics and cameras, internet, or a quiet space to video etc)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kerri Pope<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discussed her approach towards striking a balance between synchronous and asynchronous course design through her use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Siy2i4c11D2EwW9BphqFwmlmyD9HA8lbhqrwUJT1iHc\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sliding Scale Participation Guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which she has graciously shared with the group.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shirin Khosropour<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charlotte Gullick<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> both referenced and recommended the principles outlined in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coralearning.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CORA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> webinar, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employing Equity-Minded &amp; Culturally-Affirming Teaching Practices in Virtual Learning Communities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 A recording of the webinar is available to stream <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aMrf_MC5COk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a PDF compilation of the powerpoint slides can be downloaded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/documentcloud.adobe.com\/link\/track?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:dcfef84b-edb4-4df5-bdfc-cdeb084d42b4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gale Spear<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> weighed in that the choice between synchronous and asynchronous course design will necessarily be informed by individual course objectives that can vary significantly across subjects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some general but relevant best practices mentioned by various attendees included:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deploying a pre-course survey to gauge students\u2019 access and technological literacy to help inform course design, expectations, and requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creating a short 20-30 minute introductory video that orients students to the online learning environment.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This can be accompanied by a short quiz that helps direct the instructor towards students that may require extra support navigating the course.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be mindful that the choices you make in terms of course design can have implications for the mental health and general well being of the instructor as well, which also need to be prioritized\/balanced alongside the needs and interests of the students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be considerate around expectations for students\u2019 use of cameras. Some individuals experience body dysmorphia, others are uncomfortable having their images included in class recordings, or have other privacy concerns.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multiple participants noted that recording sessions consistently prompted many students to turn off their cameras.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add course syllabus to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/blog\/add-and-update-syllabi-in-lighthouse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lighthouse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ASAP and include a list of accommodations you will provide for students in need of asynchronous alternatives to routine synchronous class sessions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider mailing advanced copies of the course syllabus to students prior to the start of the course.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider elaborating on your expectations for course attendance and participation in the course note that students can view during registration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Less to do with synchronous vs asynchronous course design and more to do with equity considerations for course content, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charlotte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> urges faculty to consider mirror texts vs. window texts i.e. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">texts that reflect students cultural identities vs texts that give peak into dominant culture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take advantage of TLED\u2019s training <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eapps.austincc.edu\/workshops\/www\/eventenroll.php?Source=ALL&amp;EventID=14706\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDiscover Your Blind Spots: Teach for All Students\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The conversation included an exchange regarding prefered online learning platforms for synchronous engagement, and reflections on the pros and cons of various platforms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many participants had favorable things to say about working with Blackboard Collaborate Ultra.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pros:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does not require instructors to send out separate links to students since it is integrated into the course shell platform that students are accustomed to regularly using.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contains a variety of features that help facilitate engagement including ability to create breakout rooms for small group discussion, white board, polling features, ability to record sessions, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cons:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mobile app is not well designed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It does not have the option for a gallery view of participants\u2019 video feeds, and does not allow you to pin a participant\u2019s webcam, which makes it impossible to integrate ASL interpretation as needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The art department and various other departmental instructors reflected on their experience using zoom.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pros:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proven to be a useful platform for interacting with students in studio arts courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does allow gallery view of attendees webcams and the ability to pin video feeds to facilitate ASL interpretation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cons:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Known security issues related to zoom bombing and data breaches facilitated by the simple act of downloading the software on personal computers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lydia CdeBaca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mentioned recent discovery of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.webex.com\/ld-mzc23k-CiscoWebexTraining\/Webex-Training\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Webex Training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> platform which is distinct from Webex Meetings and apparently features a full suite of tools for robust synchronous engagement that exceed those built into blackboard collaborate and zoom, while offering greater security, the option for gallery view of participants webcams, and the ability to pin a video to facilitate ASL interpretation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NOTE: You can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sign up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allows you to add assignments while setting up meeting, chat features, emojis, feedback (e.g. slow down, speed up, I\u2019m confused), whiteboard, screenshare, math functionality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No one mentioned google classrooms on the call but there are some strong proponents of this platform at the college, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.google.com\/teaching-resources\/?modal_active=none\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">numerous apps and extensions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that can be integrated into the classroom make it another robust tool for synchronous engagement and one that has built in live captioning as
