Ana D.’s goal is to become fluent in English so she can communicate confidently and pursue a master\u2019s degree in Clinical Psychology to continue her education. Coming to Austin two and a half years ago from Vi\u00f1ales, Pinar del R\u00edo, Cuba, Ana holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in General Psychology, a field she is passionate about. While working at an e-commerce distribution warehouse, she continues to build her English skills through the ESOL Program, where she has just started her fifth semester, and is now studying Advanced American English Pronunciation. Ana was also an ESOL 25\/26 Award Winner, named Writing Student of the Year.<\/p>\n
One of Ana\u2019s ESOL instructors, Professor Khan, remarks, \u201cI have had the privilege of teaching Ana in two classes over multiple semesters, from the beginning level through the highest level. One of the greatest rewards of teaching English learners at ACC is getting to know the thoughtful, capable, dynamic, and compassionate people behind the language barrier. Ana brings intelligence, warmth, and genuine care for others to the classroom. The qualities she has demonstrated as a student will serve her well as she pursues a career in mental health, and I am confident she has a bright future ahead of her. There is a tremendous need for bilingual Spanish-speaking mental health professionals in communities across the country, and I am honored to have played a small role in Ana\u2019s educational journey as she works toward that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n
In her leisure time, Ana enjoys spending time with family, working out at the gym, and staying current in the field of psychology. She also studies English during her free time.<\/span><\/p>\n Reflecting on her experience in the ESOL Program, Ana says the greatest benefit has been the confidence she has gained in speaking. \u201cBefore taking ESOL, I felt nervous and insecure, but now I feel more confident because I have learned to communicate effectively in English in my classes.\u201d She explains that her improvement in English has helped her feel more self-assured at work, participate in class discussions, ask questions, and navigate everyday situations, such as shopping and doctor appointments. She feels much more comfortable speaking up and seeking help when needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For new ESOL students, Ana offers three pieces of advice: don\u2019t be afraid to make mistakes, practice English every day, and ask questions whenever you need help.
