Reservation Dogs (2021-2023)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Comedy series about four Native American teenagers growing up on a reservation in eastern Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

After the live screening, we\u2019ll serve pizza and cookies and then regroup for a conversation between Dr. Cunningham and a special guest speaker.\u00a0 Attendees will also have an opportunity to pose questions about the film.<\/div>\n

Saint Omer (2022)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Rama, a literature professor and novelist, travels from Paris to Saint-Omer to <\/span>observe the trial of Laurence Coly and write about the case. Coly is a student and <\/span>Senegalese immigrant accused of leaving her 15-month-old daughter on a beach to <\/span>be swept away by the tide in Berck. Rama, who is four-months pregnant and, like <\/span>Coly, is in a mixed-race relationship and has a complex relationship with her own <\/span>Senegalese immigrant mother, feels a personal connection to Coly. She plans to <\/span>write a modern day retelling of the Greek Medea myth about the case. As she learns <\/span>more about Coly\u2019s life and the isolation Coly experienced from her family and <\/span>society while living in France, Rama becomes increasingly anxious about her own life <\/span>and pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Hero<\/b><\/i><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

After being double-crossed, Rahim finds himself imprisoned due to unpaid debt. While on a two-day leave from his sentence, he and his girlfriend, Farkhondeh, find a bag full of gold coins whose value is almost equivalent to the amount he has to pay. While taking the items for himself seems more enticing, Rahim decides to do the right thing. He returns the bag to its original owner. His selflessness puts him in the middle of media attention and public admiration.<\/p>\n

Mark D. Cunningham<\/strong> is an Associate Professor in Radio-Television-Film at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. He received his PhD in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas at Austin. He has contributed essays to national publications, several anthologies, and peer-reviewed journals focusing on such topics in film and television\/media studies as John Singleton\u2019s film Poetic Justice, Spike Lee\u2019s semi-autobiographical film Crooklyn, actor\/rapper\/activist Ice T\u2019s role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, alternative spaces of blackness in Barry Jenkins\u2019 debut film Medicine for Melancholy, and the importance of black popular culture. He has also presented papers at nationally recognized cinema and media studies conferences, facilitated talk back sessions at community events, and participated in both media and education related panel discussions. Dr. Cunningham is currently writing a book on race, gender, and narrative in the trilogy of films about South Central Los Angeles written and directed by the late John Singleton to be published by Columbia University Press.<\/p>\n","background":"Color","background_color":"#638dc9","background_gradient":{"gradient_start":"","gradient_end":""},"background_image":false,"text_mode":"light","id":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"one_column","heading":"","column_1":"
